The Desert Biennial Project

The Desert Biennial Project (DBP) is a large-scale, artist-led initiative designed to counteract the dramatic loss of art spaces across Nevada. Since 2017, the closure of thirteen galleries has left the state's arts community fragmented and underserved. DBP offers a solution: a vibrant, welcoming, and site-specific biennial exhibition held on public land at the Apex Dry Lakebed in southern Nevada, with a follow-up gallery exhibition at the Holland Project in Reno, in northern Nevada.

Organized by Nevada-based artists and curators Laura Esbensen, Bailey Anderson, and Iulia Filipov-Serediuc—along with a cohort of artists, volunteers, and community partners—DBP featured 107 artists from across the state, highlighting diverse, experimental, and interdisciplinary work. The project builds on the momentum of “Stone Soup,” an informal 2023 gathering in response to the cancellation of the Bullfrog Biennial, designed to instill a sense of solidarity on a public scale from all corners of the community.

The event will serve as a catalyst for connection, education, and long-term sustainability, with internships, public programming, and partnerships with organizations like Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Life by Music, and the Holland Project. It also aims to grow the Art+Everywhere presence in the Western U.S., helping cement Nevada as a key regional hub.

On October 18, the Desert Biennial Project took place at the Apex Dry Lakebed. Participants described the event as transformative, with one attendee calling it “a magical experience… an honor to be part of this year’s event."

The project continues through satellite exhibitions FUSE at Serva Pool in Reno, NV and MAQUETTE at Couch in the Desert, Las Vegas, NV. The organizing team is presently working on the 2025 catalog and has begun development for the Desert Biennial Project 2027.

About the ACCNV

The Arts Community Coalition Nevada (ACCNV) is a 501(c)3 organization for the future of art in Nevada. The ACCNV advocates for artists by designing programming focused on socially engaged artist research and community projects. Our mission is to cultivate a supportive community where art thrives. We strive to enable Nevada artists to exercise their humanitarian need for expression and advocacy through art.

Anderson and Filipov-Serediuc co-founded My Boyfriend’s Out of Town, a feminist collective supporting emerging artists, and organized the original Desert Biennial. Together, they also co-founded the Arts Community Coalition Nevada, a nonprofit dedicated to sustaining the state’s art scene. Esbensen joined the initiative in 2024 and now collaborates on administrative strategy and on-the-ground logistics for future events.
